School of Rock review

-Jacqui Kirwan

The Village Theatre in East Kilbride rocked out at the end of April with Encore Stars Academy production of School of Rock.

The main protagonist Dewey Finn was played by Enore founder Allen Hannah, and it seemed as if this was a role he had waited for years to play.  The entire cast were outstanding, and there was a whole heap of talent on show.  Whilst the audience was rooting for the students of Horace Green to win the Battle of the Bands; No Vacancy also raised a cheer when they performed, with Tony McKenzie doing fabulous as the lead singer in his debut Encore role.

The Horace Green School of Rock Band were brilliant with guitarist Zack, and bassist Katie, played by Beth Anderson and Amber Cooper, both bringing fantastic attitude to the roles.  They were equalled in bringing their rock personas to life by drummer Freddy (Jessica Menzies) and keyboard player Lawrence (Liam Keary).

The rest of the Horace Green students were very ably played by other cast members, with particular mention of Lucy Yule as the officious Summer, and Chloe McPhillips who shone in the role of Tamika with her amazing solo of Amazing Grace.  I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house when she led the Horace Green students in the reprise of If Only You Would Listen when they are persuading Dewey that they need to attend the Battle of the Bands, and that the bus is outside waiting for him.

The Horace Green Principle Miss Mullins was played by Encore teacher Eve Barr, and you could tell that the junior cast were inspired by the fact that they were sharing the stage with their teachers.  The attitude that they impart in Stick It To The Man was directed both to the parents and adults in the audience and the teachers on stage.  The young cast relished the opportunity to be allowed to be rude!

I have attended many performances by Encore, and whilst there is always a real feel good factor in the auditorium, with pride from family members, and recognition of the ability and talent on display on stage: never before have I witnessed a universal standing ovation at every performance.
